Homily: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 30, 2023

The Sunday readings teach us that following Jesus and doing God's will are like finding a precious treasure.

The first reading tells us how the young King Solomon opted for the great treasure of accepting God to rule his life by doing His will. That is why he requested from God the gift of wisdom, “to discern between good and evil,” so that he might govern God’s people properly. The Lord God was pleased with that request and granted Him “a wise and discerning heart” which enabled him to surpass everyone in wisdom.

In the second reading, Paul teaches that “all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” This is true for all of us who have been called by God through our baptism for a close relationship with Jesus as their greatest treasure.

In the Gospel, using similar small parables, Jesus teaches us that The Kingdom of God is something of extraordinary value, like a hidden treasure. In the Gospels, the Kingdom of God is in terms of rulership, authority and sovereignty. It is not a place. (Mark1,15. “The Kingdom of God is at hand”). Therefore The Kingdom of God is Jesus Christ, himself, his life and ministry revealed to us through the Sacred Scriptures, Tradition and the Church. So, possessing Him demands from us a total commitment. Giving up everything for Jesus Christ as our great treasure which will lead to our reward of eternal life, if we can preserve Him as God wants until the end of our lives.

Through the first and second parables of the treasure and the pearl, Jesus teaches us that identifying God’s will and living according to the Gospel are the most precious things in life. Through God’s will and the Gospel, we come to know and understand the real meaning of life, the will of God for us each day and the most important things we must do to secure our eternal salvation.

Brothers and Sisters, we should live every moment in view of our precious goal “Jesus Christ”. Sometimes by mistake we can fall into chasing false treasures. So that we can waste our time and we can lose the meaning of life. Only Jesus Christ is the genuine treasure of the precious pearl here on earth and in Heaven. Also, we need to take all precautions to keep our greatest treasure of Jesus Christ safe. To protect this treasure, we must accept Him every day, obey Him, ask for His help, talk to Him in prayer, make peace with Him and others, attend Mass, and receive Holy Communion.

May Holy Mary intercede for us to be always faithful to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
